Magdalena

THE MAGDALENA 

Magdalena is the most important holiday in Castellon. It is celebrated on the 3rd Saturday before Lent. It represents the founding of Castellon, in which people left the mountain and went to the plain in 1252. This tradition has been celebrated for seven centuries and every year the citizens from Castellon go to the mountain to remember their past. This holiday has only nine days of duration, in spite of this, everyday has a special story. Every morning at 2 p.m. all people goes to see “La Mascleta”, it is a kind of fireworks but it takes place in the morning and the main objective of this is the noise. In the afternoon people can go to different places and do different kind of activities that depend on the age and the day, for example: one day the town hall fills the main street with confetti, other day people go to see the “Pregón” (it is a parade, in which people from the province of Castellon play typical instruments and dance. Moreover at night in some squares you can find a lot of dj’s that play in the streets, as a consequence all the city is full of young people dancing and having fun. However you mustn’t forget that this holiday represents the founding of Castellon, for this reason there is one day when all citizens of Castellon have to go up the mountain. There, there was the ancient city of Castellon and they must ring the bell of the Magdalena hermitage. To sum up Magdalena is an ancient tradition that takes place every year in Castellon for commemorate its past. In addition its success during the last years has made it and international party. This is the reason why many foreigners visit us and wear our typical green ribbon.
